Breakwaters are natural or man-made obstructions to the progression of waves, forming an area of relatively calm water. While the common image of a breakwater is a rock extension of the shoreline, reefs and other undersea obstructions can also be considered breakwaters. Breakwaters are common around ports and marinas, where they form a protected moorage (safe harbour) for vessels.
