Canal

A canal is a man made body of water used to provide transportation of goods via water. Simply put a canal is a trench filled with water, often times canals are created or follow the path of an existing stream, stream bed or they may parallel to an existing stream, in some cases canals have been constructed where no stream currently exists but these need to be filled with an external water source. Many canals employ locks a series of locks or boat lift to allow for the passage of ships/boats over hilly terrain or to compensate for a difference in elevation between two existing bodies of water.
