Capstan

Mainly used in mooring vessels, a capstan is a vertically mounted drum used for hauling line aboard a ship. Modern capstans are turned by hydraulic, pneumatic, or driven by an auxiliary engine, in the past these devices were turned using human power. A line is wrapped around the drum and then a crew member or deckhand pulls on the end of the line the more wraps on the drum and the harder the crewman pulls the faster the line will come in. The capstan is very similar in function to a windlass and also to winches aboard sailing yachts.
