Composites are formed by joining two or more distinct materials. Many materials offer directional strength, high strength to weight ratios, and/or particular resistance to corrosion in a marine environment, making them particularly suited to boat building (For now, see FRP). Composites have a tendency to lack stiffness, particularly when high-strength composites are used (leading to a thin member with a minimal moment of intertia). Composite skins are sometimes laminated to a core.
