Deadweight is the carrying capacity of the vessel, measured in tonnes or tons (i.e., DWT or Deadweight Tonnes/Tons). It is inclusive of all stores, fuel, lubricating oil, variable ballast, crew & effects, passengers, and cargo. Deadweight is related to displacement by the formula;

Displacement = Deadweight + Lightship

While deadweight can be taken for any condition of load, total deadweight is the deadweight of the vessel at it's design draught. The portion of deadweight which is cargo (or paying passengers) is also known as the pay load.
