The David W. Taylor Model Basin is a model basin located in West Bethesda, Maryland, USA and named for David Watson Taylor. It is part of the larger David W. Tayor Naval Ship Research and Development Center. Amongst the largest model basin complexes in the world, it is used extensively by the United States Navy for research and development.
The facility has a shallow water tank with turning basin (18 knots), a deep water tank (20 knots), and a high-speed tank (50 knots).
Construction began in 1937, the facility opened in 1940. It was expansively extended in 1944/45.
