Water Depth

Water depth is the distance to a reference point from the surface of the water. When unqualified, depth is considered as the distance to the ocean floor or lake bed from the surface. Water depth is most important to considerations of submarine operations, offshore oil operations, and draught restrictions. Water depth is one of the primary components of nautical charts and is measured either by taking soundings, by electronic depth sounders, or by SONAR.
