Forward Perpendicular

The forward perpendicular, often abbreviated F.P., is a vertical line extending from the point at which the stem of the vessel is intersected by the design load waterline on the profile view. Traditionally, the FP has been located to the outside plate or forward side of the stem; however, today it is commonly measured to the moulded side.

For unusual vessels, such as a trimaran this may be taken as the foremost moulded point of intersection. Where a vessel is fitted with a bulbous bow and a forward rake, the FP may be set at the aft-most extension of the raked stem.
