Feathered

A feathered propeller is one whose blades have been rotated such as to produce no thrust. Feathering a propeller requires the propeller to be controllable pitch. Feathering reduces shaftline resistance for directly connected prime movers, easing startup, as well as allowing for the engines to idle without the vessel moving. For a fixed pitch propeller, this would need a clutch or similar.
