Feed Air

Feed air is ventilation in-way of the engine compartment consumed during the combustion process of the vessels internal combustion engines. Feed air is generally supplied by forced ventilation into machinery spaces. In the case of diesel submarines, feed air can be supplied by snorkel while submerged near the surface, or at depth through chemical reaction (i.e., peroxide) - a diesel engine running in a submarine without a source of feed air can quickly consume the vessels oxygen (a proposed cause of the loss of the Chinese Submarine No.361).
