Flank Speed

Flank speed is the maximum speed the vessel is capable of, within the design margins (safety factors) of the ships systems. For example, engines are often rated to have a 10% overpower allowance for 1 hour per 12 hours (110% power) - operating at this power would be flank speed. Flank speeds can only be maintained for short periods of time but is unlikely to cause permanent damage to the vessel (unlike emergency speed). Flank speed is above and beyond full speed.
