The fore peak is a compartment formed by the bow coming together. A lower deck is not generally fitted, the shell plate forming the bottom of the compartment. Fore peaks are most commonly used as rope, paint or sail lockers, particularly when they are small. The forward location of the fore peak creates a large trimming moment when filled with water, as such makes an ideal ballast tank for trim. For the same reason, if permanent ballast is fitted, the fore peak is a common location.
