A gaff is a pole with a hook. In some places, dull gaffs are used for maneuvering near objects such as wharfs or the shore. A fishing gaff is a gaff with a sharp hook, used to haul fish over the side of a boat or wharf - particularly from nets or where the weight of the fish exceeds the lines capability.
