Icebreaker

Icebreakers are ships whose primary purpose is either the transit of areas of heavy ice (as in arctic research or coast guard vessels), or the management of ice for the navigation of other vessels, either alone, stuck, or in convoys. Other vessels with notable capabilities of self-navigation through ice are known as icebreaking vessels, and many more vessels are strengthened for operations in ice and may be referred to as ice capable. Icebreakers will have specialized hullforms, robust powering arrangements, and increased scantlings throughout.
