Lighter Aboard Ship

A lighter aboard ship, or LASH vessel, is a type of cargo ship which carries multiple lighters. LASH vessels are used to connect waterways which are unsuitable for oceangoing vessels. The LASH vessel carries & self loads/unloads the lighters, a specialized barge, which are then used to service inland ports. The LASH vessel has, for the most part, been superseded by containerization.

Loading

Loading of the lighters aboard the ship is typically done by gantry crane, though a LASH may open at the bow and 'swallow' the lighters (see Baco Liner 1
