Lignum Vitae

Lignum Vitae is a hard dense wood, on the Janka hardness scale the most dense of all woods. Typical uses include cricket balls and police batons. In 1854, John Penn invented stern tube bearings made from lignum vitae. The hard wood was well-wearing, and its oily nature & resiliance in a marine environment provided lubrication to the propeller shaft.
