Modelling is the process of generating a 3D model of a vessels hull, and/or its structure and outfit. It can also refer to the construction of a scale hull for tow tanks.

Uses of Models

Surface modelling is the creation of exterior faces of components; where surface modelling includes material thicknesses and properties. Surface modelling is generally faster, and generally sufficient for further study (material thicknesses on a large ship may be negligible, and for hydrostatic analysis, the exterior hull shape is sufficient). Solid modeling requires more computational power, as well as increased attention in order to maintain validity of the model, however the model can be used to check for interferences in components and used for weight estimates.
