Kort Nozzle

A Kort nozzle is a hydrodynamically designed shroud that encircles a ships propeller. Kort nozzle assemblies may also be referred to as ducted propellers.

History

The kort nozzle concept was originally developed between 1934-1939 by Luigi Stipa and Ludwig Kort by placing a foil shaped shroud around heavily loaded propellers at the MARIN tow tank.

Advantages

The kort nozzle is most commonly found on vessels used for towing or pushing or any other application that requires a high bollard pull. The foil shape of the nozzle accelerates the flow of water into the propeller and improves the overall efficiency of the propeller at slow speeds. When the speed of the vessel approaches or exceeds 10 knots the efficiency is lost as the appendage offers more drag.
