Planing

Planing describes a mode of operation in which a vessel is generating a positive vertical hydrodynamic force, 'lifting' the vessel to some degree from the water & decreasing draught. Planing hulls limit curvature through the aft end, encouraging flow separation and generating the positive dynamic pressure. This is in contrast to traditional displacement hulls, where the hull is curved to prevent separation and provide clean flow into the propeller (the negative dynamic pressure of a ship-shape generates squat).
