Plimsoll Mark

Plimsoll Mark

Named for Samuel Plimsoll of Bristol, who devoted his political career to maritime safety. This marking or line on the side of a vessel denotes where a vessel is to float in different conditions of loading and in waters of varying salinity/density. The original marking was a circle with a horizontal line through its center, where the ships maximum operating draught was. In more recent years more lines have been added showing safe operating load lines for different weather conditions, water temperatures (seasons), and area of operations.
