The promenade deck is a public deck for conspicuous social display. Promenade decks tend to be broad, open, continuous around and high on the vessel, ideal for strolling. On traditional ocean liners, they were often also the boat deck. On more modern vessels, they are more often shelter decks, often with screens to protect passengers from the elements. Many cruise ships will have marked lanes and distances suitable for jogging, running, etc. as well as plank decks, teak or brass handrails, and/or other nostalgic treatments.
