A Ro-Ro vessel is one where cargo rolls on, rolls off. Truck and car loading is facilitated by bow, stern and/or quarter ramps. Shore side facilities can range from a prepared beach to multi-story loading ramps (allowing for loading on multiple decks simultaneously). Ro-Ro vessels allow for the rapid loading of vehicle & vehicle based cargo, particularly for passenger vehicles as part of a transportation network.

The prominent feature of Ro-Ro's are their vehicle decks. These long open decks are measured in lane length. Access between decks is either by loading ramp or internal ramps. These ramps may be hoistable, allowing for the sealing of decks. The decks themselves may have additional hoistable tween decks; allowing for more flexible capacities.
