SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture is a research and development institute, which was founded in 1999. In 2000 SINTEF took over the management of the Flume Tank at the North Sea Centre, Hirtshals, Denmark. The Flume Tank is used for testing models of fishing gear.
The headquarter of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture is in Trondheim as many other SINTEF institutes. There is a staff of around 90 scientists and technicians, five of them in Hirtshals. The main focus is on fishing gear, and net and trawl door manufacturers and fishermen come from all over the world to the flume tank.
