Samuel Plimsoll

Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898) was a shipping agent in Bristol, UK. He is well known for his impact on ship safety. Having wrote on the the coal trade previously, his book, Our Seamen, highlighted and circumscribed the dangerous loading conditions of ships of the time. He influenced British politicians to amend the 1871 Merchant Shipping Act, eventually bringing about reform, including the requirements of the Plimsoll mark which bears his name.
