Scantling

Scantlings are the prescribed material and size of structure of a ship; typically, the cross-sectional area, moment of inertia, sectional modulus and dimensions of the structural members. The term derives from wooden shipbuilding and has carried over into steel & aluminum. Classification societies regularly prescribe minimum scantlings through their rules and regulations.
