Search And Rescue Transponder (SART)

A search and rescue transponder, or SART, is an emergency signaling device for locating survivors. When challenged by a radar, the SART will respond with a number of pulses which will display on the originating sources radar screen as a series of dots. This greatly increases the survivor, liferaft, or lifeboats radar signature and thus chance of detection. On many vessels, the SART's are held in a central location, only activated and brought to the lifecrafts in the event of an emergency.
