Shafting is the cylindrical member that transmits power from the engine and gearbox to the propeller. The shafting arrangement may be made up of one or more individual shafts connected together by couplings. The shaft is supported by bearings. Classification societies offer guidelines for how to design and size the vessels shafting.
Shafting for controllable pitch propellers can be rather complex. The shaft will be hollow, with rods or hydraulic fluid running through the centre to affect blade pitch changes via an articulated hub.
