Specific Gravity

The specific gravity of a substance is a non-denominational ratio of the density of that substance to freshwater, when both are at atmospheric pressure and standard temperature. With the metric system, this allows for a quick conversion of volume to mass;

Volume (m3) x S.G. = Mass (tonnes)
Volume (Litres) x S.G. = Mass (kilograms)

The specific gravity is also important in determining a vessels displacement from draught readings. A hydrometer can be used to measure the specific gravities.
