Superstructure

A superstructure is a decked structure above the main deck, which extends transversely either to the side shell, or otherwise a distance greater than 96% of the breadth, inclusive of quarter decks and forecastles. Narrower structures are technically deckhouses.

Superstructures are typically of lighter scantlings than the hull, housing crew or passenger accomodations and amenities. The elevated position also affords a better view for bridges or wheelhouses.
