Tank Level

Tank levels are measured by two methods, soundings and ullages. A sounding is the distance from the top of the contained fluid to a reference, either the base of the tank or a sounding pad. An ullage is the distance from the top of the tank to the top of the contained fluid. A vessels stability book will contain tables of tank soundings and/or ullages, as well as the relevant stability information (fluid volume, fluid centre of gravity (TCG, VCG, LCG), free surface effect, mass for prescribed contents) as part of the vessels tank plan.
