Model Basin

A Model Basin is a tank used for hydrodynamic testing of ships at model scale. The model data gathered in this testing can be scaled up and applied to a full size vessel. This gives the designer an accurate baseline for how the vessel will perform and how much power will be needed to propel the vessel through the water at the desired speed (measure resistance.

Types of Basins

All model basins around the world are governed by the International Towing Tank Convention (ITTC) in order to maintain a standard set of procedures.
