The Voith-Schneider propeller is a form of cycloid propulsion used in the marine industry, most often in tugboats. This system allows a vessel to be very maneuverable; because the thrust vector can be changed almost immediately. The principle behind this drive is very similar to that of a helicopter where the Voith-Schneiders individual vertical blades are mounted to a circular drive plate and each blade can rotate around its own axis. The fact that the thrust can be vectored eliminates the need for a rudder, but the need for directional stability requires most vessels employing this propulsion system to be fitted with a large skeg.
